. dana bash joins us now from capitol hill. chief white house correspondent jessica yellin on the north lawn tonight. dana, i'll start with you. you listened to big talk on the intro. today was finger pointing and political chicken, but both sides will be talking to each other tomorrow instead of at each other. what is the latest on that? >> that's right, they're going to all be going to the white house. when i say all, i mean the top four congressional leaders, democrats and republicans, to sit down with the president. i'm told by a senior democratic source here in the senate that the expectation is if they can't figure out a path forward over the next three days in this meeting tomorrow, a way to actually pass something to avertthe fiscal cliff, then it is very likely, almost definite, that we will go over the cliff. i have to tell you that sources in both parties think that's the likelihood at this point anyway, but this meeting tomorrow is absolutely going to be crucial. and what the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell who you just heard from there, what he's saying he hopes to
congressional correspondent dana bash. dana, is that the sense you get that somehow we should be optimistic about whatever it is that's going on? >> you know, as we talked about before, you definitely get a feeling or the atmosphere here is that there is progress being made but in the same breath, but, there are still thingsing to worked out. as we wait for what we generally see when the senate opens which is the pledge of allegiance, a prayer and so forth, if you see the bottom of your screen, i'm not sure if you can see it, white hair, that is harry reid, the senate majority leader. it may be we will hear an update from him. maug maybe we should listen to th the. >> prayer. >> let us feel your presence today on capitol hill, as we gather with so much work left undone, guide our lawmakers with your wisdom. lord, show them the right thing to do and give them the courage to do it. be their shelter in the midst of the storm, regardless of how high the waters rise. when they feel exhausted, remind them of the great sufficiency of your grace. look with favor on our nation and save us from self-
christmas, dana bash. >> you, too, alina. i'm dana bash in d.c. let's get started. up first. be careful what you wish for. those dreaming of a white christmas could be in for a whiteout. extreme weather is on the way christmas day and on the way for many. millions could be in store for a foot of snow or more. it could be even a rare white christmas down south along with a threat of tornadoes. more on the holiday storm and all the delays. good morning, merry christmas. >> merry christmas. >> give us the good, the bad and the ugly. >> unfortunately, for travelers, yesterday was pretty bad but today could be worse. dangerous lightning flaring up at this hour across louisiana and arkansas and behind it snow starting off as a mixture of sleet and freezing rain in places like oklahoma city and little rock, arkansas. lightning moving into dallas and stone yo this hour, so the severe weather threat in terms of tornadoes exist today across a good portion of the gulf coast and the south, including jackson, mississippi down to hattiesburg and pensacola and as far west to beaumont, tecumseh, a widesprea
hopefully to come up with some kind of deal. dana bash is flling this on capitol hill. i imagine we're all working over the holidays and i fess we're going to be working as long as they are working. hopefully they're going to get something done. we heard from house speaker john boehner earlier today. where is this? clearly it looks like now it's in the senate's hands. >> that's right. it is absolutely in the senate's handings, has been effectively since the house speaker failed to pass his so-called plan b proposal last week. and so what is going on behind the scenes right now, suzanne, is the senate democratic leader is trying to figure out if he can cobable together enough votes, which would mean he would have to have probably significant crossover to get some votes to at least pass the bear bare minimum to ahouseholds with incomes of less than $200,000. >> the speaker has just a few days left to change his mind but i have to be very honest, mr. president. i don't know time-wise how it can happen now. >> so there's a time issue because we're only five days away, but most importantly ther
